Battery Powered vs Mains Powered Blinds

In general battery powered blinds tend to be a retro-fit solution as they require no permanent connection to mains power. In the case of new builds or renovations where mains power can be directed to the electric blind this would, in most cases, be the better solution. Please see our quick reference guide below, which highlights the benefits and restrictions of both systems.

Mains Powered

UPSIDE

  • Powered – No need to replace batteries or connect charger as the blind is permanently connected to a power source.

  • Concealment – If you are at building or renovation stage you can factor in a recess to hide the blind. See our blindspace offering for more information.

  • Consistency – As the blinds have a constant level of power going to the motor you will have a far more consistent speed across the different blinds. Battery operated blinds will lose charge at different speeds depending on use and size of the blind.

  • Large Blinds – This constant power source is also more efficient at lifting larger blinds.

  • Quieter Motors – In general mains powered motors are quieter but technological improvement in battery operated blinds has reduced the gap.

DOWNSIDE

  • Retro-fitting – Not ideal as retro-fit solution as they require a powered spur or socket to the blind.

  • Require Head Case – We advise a headcase/cassette to cover the blind as you will want to hide any wiring.

  • Installation – Will require an electrician to connect the blind and overall costs may be higher.

Battery Operated

UPSIDE

  • Wireless – No need for mains power to the blind. Numerous solution available including battery or integrated rechargeable battery.

  • Installation – Ideal retro-fit solution means no need to chase in wires or hire an electrician. Can be controlled via wireless wall switch as well as remote control or app.

  • New Motors – New, more powerful motors have come to market with better battery life and quieter operation.

  • High Windows – Good solution for were a manual blind would be difficult to operate.

  • Solar Powered Options – Ideal for harder to reach places.

DOWNSIDE

  • Battery Powered – batteries will need either replacing or be connected to charger depending on system chosen. Times between replacement and recharging are excellent.

  • Consistency – Different blinds in the home/room will not only be of different sizes but will be used more or less frequently. This means batteries will drain at different speeds. All the blinds will start and stop at pre-programmed positions but may get there at different speeds.

  • Large Blinds – These will drain the battery faster than smaller blinds. Our new, more powerful motors mean that we can cater for bi-fold door runs. Fabric weight and type of blind will influence our recommendation to you.
